Chapter Fifteen

The morning light filtered through my blinds, casting slatted shadows across my bedroom. It was Monday--a new day, a new beginning. I stirred from my bed with a mixture of determination and nerves. Last week’s turbulence with the performance improvement plan now felt like distant memory, a hurdle I had not only overcome but demolished.

I glanced at the clock; plenty of time before I had to leave for work.

Then I checked my email. Always a mistake; save that shit for being at work, but something jumped out at me -- a meeting invite from senior leadership for 11am this morning.

Fuck, was I in trouble? It didn't have the word "performance" in it, but it did say "Server Plan", which could mean almost anything.

So, my routine was a little more meticulous today: obviously, a shower to wash away any lingering sleepiness, then a well-chosen outfit, my most professional shirt paired with a sleek, dark tie. The tie felt like a noose, representing my apprehension about the meeting invite from senior leadership. What did they want? Could it be about the technical architect position I had applied for? How could they find out that I applied for a job at another company? I didn't use my work email or anything, so...?

I shook my head, trying to focus on the tasks at hand.

I made myself a quick breakfast, forgoing my usual coffee for tea--something about the act of waiting for it to steep felt grounding. Seated at my kitchen table, I attempted to focus on my meal but my thoughts were as scattered as the light playing across my kitchen bench.

The drive to the office was automatic. Muscle memory guided me through the streets as my mind continued to dwell on the unsolved puzzle of the day ahead. Pulling into the parking lot, I noticed my hands were gripping the steering wheel a little too tightly. I forced them to relax, taking a few slow, deep breaths before getting out of the car.

The office was already buzzing with activity; conversations veiled in morning enthusiasm, the clacking of keyboards as my colleagues dived into their work. I tried to mirror their energy, striding up to my desk with purpose and diving into my tasks.

Surprisingly, the morning was productive. I managed to navigate through a maze of troubleshooting, server updates, and a script tweak that would streamline one of our daily processes. Accomplishments that under different circumstances would've brought satisfaction felt hollow instead, overshadowed by the looming 11 am meeting.

The digital clock on my computer screen seemed to tick louder as it approached the hour, my eyes darting to it every thirty seconds so I wouldn't be late, each minute ticking off toward whatever fate awaited me.

At 10:59, I stood up, straightened my tie one last time, and made my way to the conference room. Heart hammering, palms slightly sweating despite the cool air conditioning, I reached for the door handle.

Inside, the room wasn't filled with the foreboding panel of executives I had imagined. Instead, there sat Jess, the CTO--calm and collected--as she motioned for me to take a seat.
